Water set to rise at The Garden Centre in Brisbane Floods ???

This is a picture from the 1893 flood in Brisbane of The Lord Stanley Hotel in East Brisbane. The Lord Stanley is located  across the road from The Cottage Garden Nursery in East Brisbane. They are predicting that these current Brisbane floods which may hit tomorrow or Thursday, may be worse then the floods in 1974. Apparently the site of The Garden Centre was shoulder height under water then. If the Cottage Garden Nursery had been there in 1893 you would not be able to see it in this photo as the 1893 flood was much higher then the 1974 flood. So what to do ? Kristen and the boys are planning to head over and remove as much as we can to our home here in Hawthorne, if it is possible. Thankfully we are on high ground in Hawthorne. Of course we are mindful that at the end of the day it is only "stuff". Our thoughts are with all our fellow Queenslanders who are in floods or bracing for floods. Our country is truely a land of "droughts and flooding rain".

  1. Good grief! I hope you are going to be okay ... of course you want to protect your stock. It's hard to know how 'cautious' one should be.

Whatever happens I hope you and the boys are okay.

  3. Stay safe Katherine. It is going to be a rough ride and things are supposed to be better because we have the Wivenhoe Dam. Imagine what it would be like if it wasn't there! Those boys of yours are going to be very busy!

  6. Thinking of you. I don't think you can be TO cautious in situations like this. If you have the time & it's safe to do it, do it!
My granny has just been moved from her house in Jindalee, we are o.k here at the moment although living right next to Somerset might become an issue!!
    Stay Safe.

  15. Oh Katherine, the garden centre, I am so sorry. It's terrible. My boys are in tears as we didn't have time to grab their lizards. The river was at the end of our street when we grabbed our clothes. Now I hear the power is going out in the CBD tomorrow. Great, we've just checked into our CBD hotel!! I can't believe it has all happened so fast. I hope you are safe in Hawthorne. One of my girlfriends is in the flood part of Hawthorne and has evacuated her family. Stay safe. A-M xx

  17. Thinking of you all up there, waiting to see if my son will have to be evacuated also. All the rest of the family are safe and dry on higher land. Take care and remember, water is so dangerous not only when flooding but after too, and can cause real issues with cuts a grazes, so stay safe...T

  25. Hi, I just read your comment on my blog. I think this sort of event either brings out the best or worst in people - we'd just returned from supermarket hell where it was 'take no prisoners!'.

Loved to hear the story that people were desperate to help your clear out. Stay dry and brave!
